Fun Skill: Problem Solving
Problems prevent fun
Life problems block fun.
Gods, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
You don’t need any gods or courage to solve your problems.
You need problem-solving skills.
”The Problem-Solving Method”
I don’t know what this method is actually called or who made it. I was taught this method under the title “The Problem-Solving Method.”
It’s THE one lol.
Works for any problem.
Steps:
- Define the problem - Explain the problem in as much detail as possible. Who? What? When? Where? Why? How? Side-effects? Patterns? Is it measurable?
- List all the solutions - Brainstorm any and all solutions you can think of. Doesn’t have to be realistic or possible. Write them ALL down.
- Rank the solutions - Which solution makes sense to try first, second, etc.
- Implement the solution - The top-ranked one first. That’s why we did step 3.
- Reflect - Is the problem solved now? Did it make a new problem? Should we try solution 2 instead?
Example
- I want to go on a water slide but I don’t have a car to get to the water park.
- Buy a car, ride my bike, take the bus, hitchhike, stop enjoying water slides, build a teleportation machine, build my own water slide, backyard slip-n-slide
- Ride bike, take bus, hitchhike, buy car, the other ones are impossible
- Rode my bike but only got 1km before teh 38°C heat killed me.
- Problem is not solved. I will try solution 2.
- Rode bus to the water park.
- Problem is solved.
