Fun Skill: Change your Mind

More information -> update the theory

Irony

“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” -Albert Einstein

Einstein almost certainly did not say this.

It doesn’t even sound like something that would come from a man who wrote and thought mostly in German. It sounds like the pithy, American, 1980s self-help phrasing from 12-step culture, which exactly where the evidence points.

We won’t even change our minds about a quote about changing our minds.

Would this fictional Einstein have thought Edison insane after the 67th material failed to be a practical, commercially-viable incandescent filament?

Did that story even really happen the way we were told?

We bang our heads against the wall ✨together✨

It hurts, but everyone else is doing it, so we do it too.

In the Asch conformity experiments in the 1950s, 75% of participants went along with the confederate group’s wrong answer, rather than saying the obvious truth.

Most people don’t have the guts to disagree out loud.

They don’t want to be the fool.

Being the fool is fun!

Someone has to be the first guy to say that the emperor is naked.

“But you said something different last week!” - Some idiot

I don’t give a shit what I said last week. I CHANGED MY MIND!

“You said you wanted this!”

I wanted this before I knew how much IT SUCKS

Example

I tried to write a post about how fun pressure washing is, and realized that only humans can really be “fun heroes”. But I’ve already labeled objects and behaviors as fun heroes: permanent markers, sleep, and bicycles.

Should I rename thoses posts?

Nah, fuck it, I’ll just start a new category and remind myself that no one cares.

Because nothing matters.

Exercise

What have you changed your mind about, but not updated the behavior?

Permanent marker can be erased with sport sunscreen spray.

Tattoos can be lasered off.

Go public with your changed mind today!
